How to Make the Cutest Punch Needle Keychain Kawaii Cactus & Sun Pattern!

Looking for a cute punch needle pattern you can finish in just one evening? What if I told you that you could make the most adorable handmade keychain in a single evening — with just a little yarn, a punch needle, and one tiny square of monk’s cloth?

Hi, I’m Sibel from The Poko Design!

👋 Today I’m sharing one of my favorite small projects: a kawaii punch needle keychain set featuring a smiley cactus in a terracotta pot 🌵 and a fluffy sunshine ☀️. These little guys are basically impossible not to love.

Whether you want to keep them for yourself, hang them on your bag, or gift them to a friend — this project is quick, beginner-friendly, and ridiculously fun to make. Let’s get into it!

WHY KEYCHAINS ARE THE PERFECT PUNCH NEEDLE PROJECT

If you’ve been wanting to try punch needle but felt intimidated by bigger projects, keychains are your answer. Here’s why:

  • They’re tiny — each design finishes at about 6 cm (just under 2.5 inches)
  • They use very little yarn — perfect for using up scraps
  • They take 1–2 hours each, so you can finish one in an evening
  • They make incredible handmade gifts that look way more impressive than the effort
  • The small size means any tiny mistake is barely noticeable 😉

Seriously, keychains are the most underrated punch needle project. Once you make one, you’ll want to make ten.

ABOUT THIS PATTERN

This listing includes TWO kawaii designs in one download:

🌵 Kawaii Cactus — a round little cactus in a terracotta pot with the sweetest smiling face

☀️ Kawaii Sun — a fluffy, spiky sunshine with rosy cheeks and a happy expression

  • Approx. 6 cm finished size (7-8 cm with the keychain ring)
  • Clean, simple outlines — easy to trace and punch
  •  Printable on A4
  • Instant digital download – start the same day!

The bundle includes 1 PDF file and 1 JPG, so you have everything you need to print, trace, and punch right away.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

For each keychain, you’ll need:

  • Punch needle tool (size 10 / medium works great)
  • Monk’s cloth, approx. 15×15 cm per design
  • Small embroidery hoop (10–12 cm)
  • Worsted weight yarn in:

🌵 Cactus: medium green, dark green, terracotta/rust, white or cream.

☀️ Sun: mustard yellow, white, light pink or peach for cheeks

  • Small sharp scissors
  • Fabric marker
  • Keychain ring + ribbon (to finish — any craft store has these!)
  • Fabric glue to secure the back

The small size means you only need tiny amounts of yarn — this is a great scrap yarn project! 🎉

HOW TO USE THE PATTERN

  1. Download the PDF instantly after purchase.
  2. Print at 100% scale — don’t resize!
  3. Trace the design onto the back of your monk’s cloth.
  4. Mount in your hoop and make sure the fabric is drum-tight.
  5. Punch color by color — start with the largest sections first.
  6. Secure the back with fabric glue and let it dry completely.
  7. Cut out your design, leaving a small border to fold and glue under.
  8. Attach your keychain ring and tie a little ribbon bow. Done! 🎀

TIPS FOR MAKING TINY PUNCH NEEDLE PROJECTS

Working small is a little different from working on a larger coaster or wall hanging. Here are my top tips for getting the best results:

  • Use a smaller hoop than usual. A 10–12 cm hoop keeps things tight and manageable for a keychain-sized project.
  • Be extra careful with spacing. On a tiny design, each punch really counts. Aim for punches that are very close together so the finished surface looks full and fluffy.
  • For the face details — the eyes and smile — use just 2–3 punches per feature. Less is more at this scale!
  • Don’t rush the finishing. The back of a keychain takes more handling than a coaster, so be generous with the fabric glue and let it dry fully before cutting.
  • A little bow makes everything cuter. Tie a small ribbon through the keychain ring for that handmade-with-love finishing touch. 🎀

MAKE A MATCHING SET

These two designs look absolutely adorable together — the cactus and the sun are like best friends! Some fun ideas:

  • Make both and give them as a set for a birthday gift
  • Keep the sun and gift the cactus (or vice versa!)
  • Make a cactus keychain for your bag and a sun for your keys
  • Make multiples in different colorways — a pink cactus? A blue sun? Yes!

They also pair beautifully with the other kawaii patterns in my shop if you want to build a whole collection of tiny punch needle charms. 🧡
